For several years now, Digital Storm have been proud to be the marketing partner for Out of Your Hands. If you’re unfamiliar with Out of Your Hands, it’s an educational campaign that aims to inform young people about the risks of mobile and online crime, and educate them on how they can protect themselves.
The campaign was launched in 2004 in response to the need for mobile phone theft education targeting both victims and perpetrators. This followed the news that 1 million phones had been stolen amongst under-17s the previous year.
The campaign was initially aimed at 11 to 14 year olds but now produces materials for children in primary, secondary and further education. It has also expanded beyond mobile theft to cover a huge range of topics related to mobile and online safety; teaching young people how to protect themselves from everything from phishing to identity theft.

Digital Storm has been working with Out of Your Hands since 2008, using our marketing and design services to help them reach as many young people as possible. We designed the website, which is the main hub of the campaign and contains information and educational resources for teachers, parents and young people themselves.
In order to communicate the important messages of the campaign effectively, we designed the website to deliver the information to young people in a variety of interesting and engaging ways. The website provides compelling and informative short films, real life victim and perpetrator case studies, free national curriculum materials for teachers to use in class, up to date information on the latest scams to look out for, and helpful advice on using technology safely.
We’ve also been responsible for coming up with marketing strategies to help the campaign reach a wider audience. We recently launched the Out of Your Hands Public Information Film competition, in which we are inviting students aged 11 – 16 to produce a short Public Information Film on the themes of phishing, vishing, mobile crime or identity theft. To accompany the competition we produced a free assembly resource for schools, containing everything teachers need to put on an assembly as an introduction to the competition for their students, including a presentation, notes, and a leaflet with information about the competition and the issues it covers.
